Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service

Location: Sunderland
Website: https://www.twfire.gov.uk/

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (often abbreviated TWFRS) is the statutory fire and rescue authority serving the metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear in the North East of England. Established on 1 April 1974 as the Tyne and Wear Metropolitan Fire Brigade, it brought together several smaller local brigades to form a single, modern fire and rescue service covering the boroughs of Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland, protecting a diverse population of around 1.1 million people across approximately 208 sq mi (538 km²). In 2004, reflecting national changes in fire service roles, the name was updated to Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service to emphasise its wider emergency functions beyond firefighting.

TWFRS operates from 17 strategically located fire stations throughout the region, employing close to 900 staff — including frontline firefighters, control room operators, technical support and community safety teams — to respond to emergencies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Its responsibilities span a broad spectrum of incidents, not just fires: the service attends road traffic collisions, water and rope rescues, hazardous materials incidents, and other complex emergencies. In recent years, the service has demonstrated operational excellence, answering tens of thousands of emergency calls annually and maintaining one of the fastest average response times in the UK.

A key part of TWFRS’s work is prevention and protection — educating the public about fire safety and risk reduction, particularly in homes and schools. Through initiatives such as Safe & Well visits and community outreach programmes, firefighters work proactively with residents and partner organisations to reduce the likelihood of incidents and encourage safer behaviour. Equally important is the Service’s commitment to safeguarding vulnerable people, with clear policies and partnership working aimed at protecting individuals at risk from abuse, neglect or exploitation.

Innovation and collaboration are at the heart of the Service’s strategic direction. TWFRS has earned national recognition, including being named UK Fire and Rescue Service of the Year in 2025 — a testament to its forward‑thinking approach, strong community engagement and commitment to public safety. Alongside emergency response and education, the Service continues to invest in sustainability, modern equipment and facilities, such as the UK’s first carbon‑neutral emergency services tri‑station at Hebburn, developed in partnership with other blue‑light services.

Governed by the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Authority, which comprises elected representatives from the five boroughs and the Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner, TWFRS operates within a robust framework of transparency and accountability. This governance structure ensures resources are used effectively in line with community needs and statutory obligations. Whether tackling a serious blaze, saving lives from road accidents, or educating future generations about safety, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service remains a cornerstone of public protection in the North East of England.
