TUI Group — commonly known simply as TUI — is one of the largest and most influential travel and tourism companies in the world, with its roots stretching back nearly a century. Originally founded in 1923 as an industrial firm, the organisation transitioned into tourism in the late 20th century and now operates a highly integrated portfolio of travel services. Today, TUI is headquartered in Germany, listed on stock exchanges including the Frankfurt Stock Exchange (MDAX), and serves millions of customers across Europe and beyond.

At its core, TUI is a global leisure and travel powerhouse offering everything from package holidays to flights, hotels, cruises and holiday experiences. The company’s extensive portfolio includes over 400 hotels, some 18 cruise ships, five airlines with over 125 aircraft, and a network of more than 1,200 travel agencies and online platforms — enabling travellers to book almost every aspect of a holiday through a single provider. Through these diverse services, TUI aims to guide customers from the moment they start planning a trip all the way through to their return home.

TUI’s evolution has been shaped by mergers and expansion. For example, the British leisure travel group TUI Travel PLC — formed in 2007 from the merger of First Choice Holidays and TUI’s own tourism division — was reintegrated into the broader TUI Group in 2014, creating a fully unified global travel business. In the UK, familiar brands such as TUI Airways (formerly Thomson Airways) continue to fly holidaymakers from British and Irish airports to destinations across Europe, Africa and beyond.

The company’s reach extends well beyond flights and resorts. TUI also invests in digital tools and destination services designed to enrich travellers’ experiences once they arrive, such as curated excursions, activity bookings and on‑site hospitality. There’s also an increasing emphasis on sustainability and social impact: the TUI Care Foundation supports projects in more than 30 countries that aim to promote education, environmental protection and community development through tourism.

Like many travel companies, TUI has faced challenges — from pandemic‑related disruptions to recent aviation and booking trends — but it has shown resilience by adapting its offerings, diversifying its geographic footprint and responding to changing consumer behaviour. For instance, in early 2026 it reported stronger‑than‑expected operating profits, buoyed by last‑minute bookings and shifts toward higher‑margin holiday experiences.

Overall, TUI stands as a seminal player in global tourism, shaping how millions of people travel for leisure. By combining airlines, hotels, cruise lines, agencies and destination services under a unified brand, it offers travellers a comprehensive range of options while constantly evolving to meet the demands of modern holidays in a dynamic global market.
